Introduction

The National Skills Competition (NSC) is an exciting platform where skilled young Namibians come together to showcase their skills by competing against one another. The competition, which is organised by the NTA WorldSkills Namibia (WSN), is aimed at attracting Namibian youth to take up technical and vocational careers. It is an important platform that helps to demystify negative societal perceptions of Technical Vocational Education.

The NSC is held every second year and is a key deliverable for the TVET sector under the Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP), which advocates for the staging of a “National Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) skills competition bi-annually, to promote VET as an education subsector of choice”. The competition, which is open to entrants from all public and private training institutions, industry employers, as well as private candidates, is critical in uplifting the value and quality of the TVET system, ultimately ensuring that Namibia has a skilled citizenry that can lead to an industrialised and knowledge-based economy.

Through this competition, competitors (trainees) and experts (trainers) gain much needed exposure to world-class training standards and practices as well as networking and collaborative opportunities with their counterparts.

Background

As the custodian for the TVET sector, the NTA, through WSN, highly values the opportunity to organise and stage NSCs. The first edition of the NSC was held in September 2016 with 115 competitors, from 26 TVET institutions countrywide, competing in 10 different occupational skill areas, namely: Automotive Technology; Bricklaying; Carpentry; Cooking; Electrical Installations; Joinery; Refrigeration and Air-conditioning; Plumbing and Heating; Wall and Floor Tiling; and Welding.

It was also as a direct outcome of the NSC2016 that 7 competitors represented Namibia at the last WorldSkills Competition (WSC) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in October 2017. As a key deliverable under the Social Progression Pillar of the Harambee Prosperity Plan, towards improving the image of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET), the NSC serves as a platform for skilled trainee artisans to showcase their skills and competencies to visitors/observers, particularly school learners, and by so doing assist in demystifying the negative societal perception of TVET as an avenue for academic failures.

The NSC also serves as a platform for the selection of Namibia’s competitors to the next WorldSkills Competition scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russia, 22 – 27 August 2019.
