As we mark International Women’s Day, WorldSkills Namibia proudly embraces this year’s theme, “Accelerate Action.” This theme resonates strongly with Namibia’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, where women continue to break barriers and redefine traditionally male-dominated fields. By driving these efforts forward, we can unlock the full potential of our workforce and contribute to sustainable development.
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women in technical fields and inspire young people to pursue careers in skills development. At WorldSkills Namibia, we take pride in showcasing the success stories of Namibian women excelling in TVET.
One such trailblazer is Simonia Swartbooi (23), who represented Namibia in Welding at the WorldSkills Competition 2024 in Lyon, France. Inspired by her father, a technician, Simonia developed a passion for welding from a young age. Reflecting on her journey in this highly specialized field, she shares, “I have always been fascinated by welding and feel fulfilled contributing to the technical industry.”
Another inspiring young woman is Dry-Genice Higoam (25), who competed in Mechatronics at the same WorldSkills Competition. She describes her passion for the trade as an exciting challenge that allows her to design, build, commission, maintain, repair, and program automated industrial equipment.
Like many others, their journeys have not been without challenges. However, their achievements serve as powerful examples that women can excel in technical careers. Their success challenges outdated perceptions and encourages more young women to explore high-demand trades, fostering a society that fully recognizes and values women’s contributions across all sectors.
The WorldSkills Namibia Secretariat firmly believes that empowering women in male-dominated trades is essential for building a more inclusive and equitable skills ecosystem. By championing and supporting women in skills development, we pave the way for a more diverse, innovative, and dynamic future.
Happy International Women’s Day!
